Penang blast into last eight, Malacca in despite loss

PENANG and Malacca qualified for the men’s hockey quarter-finals in contrasting fashions at the Gong Badak Sports Complex yesterday.

Penang took over as Group C leaders after completing their fixtures with a 6-2 rout of Perlis. And they confirmed their ticket to the quarter-finals after leaders Kelantan fell to a 1-2 defeat by Pahang.

Pahang, who are currently in third spot, will join Penang in the quarter-finals if they can avoid defeat against winless Perlis today.

In Group C, Malacca booked their place in the knockout stage despite a 3-4 defeat by Perak. Malacca’s cause was aided by Selangor, who trounced Brunei 19-2.

Ten players got on the scoresheet for Selangor with Khairul Azwan and Faridzul Afiq scoring four goals each.

Selangor have completed their group fixtures and are in second place. But they are facing elimination because third-placed Perak, who only trail Selangor on goal difference, take on hapless Brunei in their final group match today.

Defending champions Federal Territories and hosts Terengganu have already qualified from Group A but the three-team Group B is still open.

Leaders Johor only need to avoid a big defeat against bottom-placed Sarawak to confirm their ticket. If Sarawak fail to overturn a six-goal deficit, then Kedah will advance from the group.
