FT to pay RM2,500 for each Sukma gold

KUALA LUMPUR: A Sukma gold medal will be worth RM2,500 to an athlete in the Federal Territories (FT) contingent.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique hoped that the money would be a good incentive for the athletes to deliver gold after failing to hit their 50-gold target in the 2006 Sukma in Alor Star.

He was speaking to reporters after the flag handing-over ceremony to chef-de-mission Datuk Bakaruddin Othman here yesterday.

At the 2006 Games, FT had a haul of 25-31-35 for seventh place in the standings.

Zulhasnan said that for the upcoming Games, they would have a contingent of 743 athletes and officials and the target was to win 45 gold medals.

“We did not meet the target in the previous Sukma and I would like to make sure that we make it this time,” he said, adding that the FT Sports Council were in discussion on cash incentives for athletes who win gold medals in team events.

Bakaruddin said that the athletes were well-prepared and that the 45 gold medal-target was realistic.

“We believe most of our gold medals will come from aquatics, shooting, athletics, netball and sepaktakraw. Our athletes are physically and mentally ready for the challenges and I hope they can deliver.” – Bernama
